Swinton Cookery School

Just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Swinton Park Hotel is a Grade II-listed castle and the ancestral home of the Earls of Swinton. Family-owned and deeply connected to its surroundings, it invites guests to experience Northern England’s landscape and culture at a gentler pace. With more than 200 acres of parkland and gardens, individually designed bedrooms, and seasonal British dishes crafted from estate-grown and locally sourced produce, every detail reflects a true sense of place. Guests can enjoy wild swimming, forest walks, falconry, foraging, and other experiences across the estate that offer an immersive connection to Yorkshire life.

Impact in Action

How sustainability leadership comes to life at Swinton Park Hotel:

The Woolkeepers Project

Swinton Park Hotel partners with the Woolkeepers Association to support British wool producers, including tenant farmers on the estate grounds. This ensures farmers are paid fairly while supporting the care of their flocks and land, local traditions, and local economy. Wool procured for the estate becomes high-quality bedding and beautiful souvenirs in the gift shop.

Land Stewardship

As part of the wider 20,000-acre Swinton Estate, including 7,000 acres of open moorland and 1,700 acres of woodland, Swinton Park Hotel maintains a long-standing commitment to land stewardship. It works alongside the Yorkshire Dales River Trust and Nidderdale National Landscape to help improve river habitats and encourage biodiversity through wildflower meadows and sensitive woodland management.

Estate to Plate

The dining experience at the hotel’s restaurants showcases low-impact, regional menus. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs grow in the estate’s Walled Garden and greenhouse, both of which guests can tour. Chefs forage for wild ingredients across the estate. Meats come from trusted tenant farmers, helping to reduce food miles and support the local farming community. It all comes together on the plate, where guests are treated to seasonal cuisine that highlights both Yorkshire flavors and the freshest foods available.

Land and Community Enrichment

The Swinton Foundation is a charitable trust that has donated more than £80,000 to help regenerate the rural environment and fund local artists, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits in Masham and the wider Yorkshire Dales. The foundation has supported primary schools and youth sports associations, helped rebuild churches and supply community buildings, and maintains traditions like the Masham Sheep Fair.

Riparian Repair Focus

The Rural Flood Management Initiative works to repair centuries of deforestation in the UK, which has contributed to increased rain run-off and flooding. Swinton Park Hotel works with local farmers and replants hardwood trees in former pastureland, slowing the flow of tributaries with locally sourced Swinton wool logs. The hotel also plants a tree for every guest stay, totalling 23,000 trees on the estate to date and counting.
