The most iconic 70-mile stretch of central Californian coastline needed help alleviating the negative effects of excessive visitation, which was harming the quality of life for residents and threatening the destination’s natural and cultural heritage. Through an extensive multi-stakeholder engagement process, Beyond Green Consulting developed a 129-page Big Sur Destination Stewardship Plan (DSP) that enabled Big Sur to address tourism-related challenges and implement solutions.
The plan included a virtual, bilingual Big Sur Resident Survey collecting feedback on tourism-related issues and solutions, drawing 345 responses. Creative solutions included the development of a “Go Green” visitor day pass to generate revenue for a Sustainability Fund, and establishing a community corps of volunteers to educate visitors. The plan was accepted by Monterey County and is recognized as a model for sustainable tourism planning in California and beyond.
