Creating a destination stewardship model in Big Sur, California

The most iconic 70-mile stretch of central Californian coastline needed help alleviating the negative effects of excessive visitation, which was harming the quality of life for residents and threatening the destination’s natural and cultural heritage. Through an extensive multi-stakeholder engagement process, Beyond Green Consulting developed a 129-page Big Sur Destination Stewardship Plan (DSP) that enabled Big Sur to address tourism-related challenges and implement solutions.

The plan included a virtual, bilingual Big Sur Resident Survey collecting feedback on tourism-related issues and solutions, drawing 345 responses. Creative solutions included the development of a “Go Green” visitor day pass to generate revenue for a Sustainability Fund, and establishing a community corps of volunteers to educate visitors. The plan was accepted by Monterey County and is recognized as a model for sustainable tourism planning in California and beyond.

Showcasing sustainability impact in action for French Polynesia’s leading hospitality company

Commitment to sustainable tourism is a common thread running through all Pacific Beachcomber properties in French Polynesia, and each was at a different phase in their journey. To better showcase individual property efforts and portfolio-wide impact with the public, Beyond Green Consulting was hired to help share their sustainability stories with a global audience.

Beyond Green Consulting led the development of refreshed sustainability website content for all Pacific Beachcomber properties, and an environmental, social & governance (ESG) report that showcased the company’s overall sustainability performance and impact through quantitative data and compelling copy. The success of the company’s first ESG report led to a second edition that continues to evolve and share ESG performance through metrics and storytelling.

Developing a regional ecotourism plan in Coastal Alabama

From infrastructure and marketing to capacity-building and capital investments, Coastal Alabama saw an opportunity for sustainable tourism to alleviate several challenges and extend the benefits of tourism beyond its beaches.

Beyond Green Consulting led an immersive year-long project to assess existing products, identify opportunities, and make recommendations to connect and promote regional Nature, Culture, and Community. The project kicked off with extensive multi-stakeholder engagement of 70+ interviews with local businesses, community groups, county and state officials, and other tourism organizations. From there Beyond Green Consulting created a destination marketing campaign inclusive of branding, creative, and a new tagline to promote the region to a diverse demographic. In the end, The Coastal Alabama Regional Ecotourism Plan presented a roadmap for the destination to protect nature, empower communities, and drive economic growth through sustainable tourism development.

Assessing sustainable tourism opportunities in La Ceiba, Honduras

Honduras knew its La Ceiba region could rival its Central American neighbors as a premier ecotourism destination, and hired Beyond Green Consulting to assess its existing tourism products and make strategic development recommendations.

Beyond Green Consulting led a comprehensive on-the-ground assessment – including extensive community stakeholder engagements and product analyses – throughout the La Ceiba region, providing implementable solutions across several strategic pillars, including how to:

  • Grow tourism strategically by improving public safety
  • Promote sustainable practices and environmental awareness
  • Expand guide training and community capacity building

This assessment, in conjunction with a marketing and public relations plan developed by PTG Consulting, led to over 91 million impressions, including Honduras listed as one of 52 Places to Go in The New York Times.

Paving the way to sustainable tourism leadership in Panama and beyond

As part of a sustainability advisory role with the parent company’s larger hotel portfolio, Beyond Green Consulting was asked to guide their Panamanian island resort toward becoming a model of sustainable tourism leadership within Central America and globally.

Beyond Green Consulting conducted a a 360-degree assessment and report including sustainability strengths, challenges, opportunities, and key recommendations to integrate leadership best practices across operations and departments. They supported management in implementation through advisory services and training materials to help empower their team to “walk the walk” of sustainability leadership. A key deliverable from Beyond Green Consulting was an educational employee handbook on sustainable tourism, local context, and the property’s commitment and impact across support for local Nature, Culture, and Community.

Developing a new eco-resort from the ground up in Costa Brava, Spain

Well regarded in Andorra for its luxury wellness resorts, Plaza Hotels & Resorts sought the expertise of Beyond Green Consulting to guide the development of the company’s first property in Spain, Talaia Plaza EcoResort, with the goal of qualifying for membership in the global Beyond Green sustainable tourism leadership hotel portfolio upon opening.

Beyond Green Consulting partnered with Talaia Plaza EcoResort’s management team to support development of property-specific standards, materials, hotel operations, and guest programming based on sustainability best practices. Talaia Plaza EcoResort successfully joined the global Beyond Green hotel portfolio upon opening and has since been featured in Spain’s National  Geographic Traveler for its sustainability accomplishments.
