Set in Ireland's emerald hills, Dromoland Castle merges 16th-century grandeur with contemporary comfort. As the ancestral home of one of Ireland's oldest Gaelic families — and direct descendants of one of the country's most powerful kings — this estate offers lavish suites, enchanting gardens, a championship GEO-certified golf course, refined dining, and an indulgent spa. Sustainability here is framed as a sacred trust, committed to both genuine Irish heritage as well as regenerative hospitality initiatives. It also unfolds in guest experiences that include falconry with hawks and owls across ancient woodlands, archery on castle grounds, walking history tours steeped in ancient storytelling, walks along the Woodland Fairy Trail and genealogy sessions that trace Irish roots.
Impact in Action
These are among the most inspiring initiatives advancing sustainable, positive-impact travel at  at Dromoland Castle.
Biodiversity on the Estate
Dromoland Castle's walking paths allow you to explore the estate's natural beauty, with more trails continuing to be developed. Efforts to protect biodiversity include swift nesting sites, wildlife habitats, and a garden-to-kitchen program. Food waste becomes compost that nourishes soil, supports pollination and grows wildflower meadows across the property.
Community Engagement and Local Partnerships
Dromoland Castle welcomes local schools for sustainability tours covering the estate's biodiversity, waste management, food systems and circular economy principles. The resort also offers paid employee volunteer days, partners with charities that align with Dromoland's own focus on meaningful and measurable impact, and provides seasonal outreach including Christmas gifting to a local nursing home.
Commitment to Decarbonization
Using 2018 as a baseline, Dromoland Castle targets a 45% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, demonstrating long-term commitment to climate action. To date, the estate has made significant strides in reducing both total emissions and emissions per guest night through energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy generation, fleet electrification, sustainable procurement and guest engagement programs, with all progress monitored with a carbon calculator.
Lawns by Goats
In 2025, a new initiative for environmentally friendly lawns was introduced to Dromoland Castle grounds: goats. These animals mark a return to traditional groundskeeping methods. They also provide a labor and fossil fuel-free method for keeping tall grasses down, preventing climbing vines from covering stone walls and fences with no damage to the structure, and simultaneously promoting natural biodiversity.
