UNESCO World Heritage Site City: La Antigua

Set in Guatemala’s central highlands, Porta Hotel Antigua occupies the grounds of a former coffee estate in the heart of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage city renowned for its distinctive architecture and cobblestone streets. Centered around a 16th-century Spanish Baroque-style hacienda, the hotel blends authentic Guatemalan character, from hand-hewn wooden beams and handwoven textiles to locally inspired décor, with modern comforts including an outdoor pool, spa, sauna, and traditional temazcal sweat lodge. Just a short stroll from the city’s vibrant central plaza, the hotel offers an ideal base for exploring the region. Through its in-house travel agency, A la Carta Tours, guests can discover Guatemala’s rich culture and landscapes alongside certified local guides on experiences ranging from volcano hikes and coffee plantation visits to guided walks of Antigua’s historic churches, landmarks, and cultural treasures.

Impact in Action

How sustainability leadership comes to life at Porta Hotel Antigua:

Protect the Cloud Forest

To reduce its impact, Porta Hotel Antigua developed a solar photovoltaic park to supply renewable energy, and offers EV charging stations for its guests. A partnership with Defensores de la Naturaleza supports the protection of the Sierra de las Minas Biosphere Reserve, home to 60 percent of the country’s cloud forest. Guests of the hotel are invited to contribute donations that support the forest’s rangers and wildfire brigades in their efforts to conserve the forest and prevent wildfires.

Community Contributions

Porta Hotel Antigua is dedicated to supporting the cultural heritage and economy of its surrounding community. The hotel sponsors art fairs several times a year, and sells the work of some 30 local artists and artisans in its gift shop. It also partners with FUNGUAMEX, a nonprofit aiding the educational and cultural enrichment of young Guatemalans.

Led by Local Guides

A la Carta Tours, based out of the hotel, works with certified local guides who provide not just expertise but knowledge of the natural world. The organization also makes a special effort to partner with small-business owners and entrepreneurs.
