Napa River, Mayacamas Mountains

At the gateway to Napa Valley wine country, Carneros Resort and Spa sits among golden fields between the winding Napa River and the Mayacamas Mountains. Each of its private cottages, garden suites, and residences are built for relaxation, be it by a fire pit with a glass of local pinot noir or with coffee on the front porch in a rocking chair made from recycled milk cartons. Guests will quickly notice Carneros’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends across the property, from access to a fleet of electric vehicles and orange bike cruisers to its on-site apiary open for tours. Behind the scenes, all food waste is composted, and Carneros’s three restaurants feature produce and herbs from its on-site gardens, eggs from its free-range chickens, and additional seasonal ingredients from small regional suppliers. Each meal tastes farm fresh, an elevated take on California cuisine.

Impact in Action

How sustainability leadership comes to life at Carneros Resort and Spa:

Supporting Biodiversity

The resort’s on-site apiary supports local pollinators and promotes biodiversity across the property. Guests can experience the world of beekeeping firsthand through “All the Buzz” apiary tours and the “Bee Mindful” sound healing experience, based around the low-frequency vibrations of beehives. Both are designed to celebrate the essential role of bees in healthy ecosystems.

Promoting Circular Waste Steams

All food waste at Carneros is composted using the Mill Food Recycling System, which is then used to fertilize the on-site gardens while proteins are composted off-site. Cooking oils are reused as biofuels. An on-site glass crusher gives used glass a second life as sand for the resort’s bocce courts.

Conserving Water

To help conserve the region’s water supply, Carneros harvests rainwater and has two on-site retention ponds that recycle nearly four million gallons of water annually to support fire suppression. It also maintains its own wastewater treatment plant, repurposing grey water for irrigation, and landscapes with native, drought-tolerant plants.

Connecting with Community

Carneros is a longtime supporter of Napa Valley Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) whose outreach is widespread, from donating food and produce to areas devastated by local wildfires to funding local academic scholarships. The resort also supports education and equity initiatives including its Diversity in Wine program, which highlights wines made from vintners and winemakers of color.
