Ancient Mayan city of Caracol deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve

Deep in Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, this former Coppola family hideaway turned serene mountainside retreat welcomes guests to the heart of Belezian Mayan civilization. A founding member of Beyond Green, Blancaneaux Lodge has an open-air layout with thatched-roof cabanas, set on a creek among dense thickets of tropical pines, oaks, and palmetto. The design is intended to reduce emissions and connect guests to the energy of the forest. Native landscaping helps maintain a habitat for macaws, howler monkeys, and iguanas, while jaguar, tapir, and ocelots can be spotted in the larger reserve. Local produce from nearby farms and onsite gardens supply the lodge’s Guatemalan and Italian restaurants. Close enough to the ancient Mayan city of Caracol for day trips, guests at Blancaneaux can also experience the region’s rich cultural history on guided tours.

Impact in Action

How sustainability leadership comes to life at Blancaneaux Lodge:

Local Art on Display

To support the local economy and offer guests an authentic connection to the region’s culture, Blancaneaux Lodge regularly welcomes local musicians, artists, and artisans to lead music, art, and Spanish language classes. The lodge further supports the community by sourcing food from nearby farmers, purchasing locally made soaps and amenities, and showcasing handcrafted goods, including hand-painted wooden masks and traditional hand-embroidered huipils made by local residents.

Keeping Emissions Low

Reducing energy use and carbon emissions is a key priority at Blancaneaux Lodge. A hydroelectric system on Privassion Creek supplies around 85% of the energy used by the lodge and staff housing. Thatched-roof cabanas are designed with natural materials, local tiles, and vaulted ceilings that encourage natural cooling, reducing the need for air conditioning. Kitchen scraps are composted, and used cooking oil is recycled into biofuel, further minimizing waste.

Bees for Biodiversity

Guests are invited to visit the lodge’s onsite beehives and learn about the vital role honeybees play in supporting biodiversity and forest health. Through guided experiences, guests gain insight into these remarkable pollinators and their essential contribution to sustaining thriving ecosystems.

Guests Give Back

Blancaneaux guests are invited to help plant pine and mahogany seedlings as part of an ongoing reforestation project. They can also make donations to regional charities and nonprofits such as the Belize Wildlife Clinic, which supports injured, orphaned, and imperiled animals.
