A peaceful rural retreat on Spain’s rugged northwest coast, ARTIEM Asturias is just 10 minutes from the city of Gijón but deeply embedded in the rolling meadows and verdant agricultural valleys of España Verde. Originally conceived as a wellness club, the hotel entices with its 500-square-meter spa and outdoor pool, and encourages guests to embrace “airplane mode” to disconnect digitally and reconnect with their surroundings. ARTIEM is deeply committed to supporting the local farms and villages, sourcing seasonal ingredients for fresh, wholesome regional cuisine served at its restaurant lounge, THE GREEN, and leading guests on excursions to Los Caserinos, a working family farm that goes back four generations. Guests can make a direct impact by staying in the “Solidarity Room,” where 100 percent of their stay goes to Cáritas, an international non-profit organization supporting families in need.

Impact in Action

How sustainability leadership comes to life at ARTIEM Asturias:

Low-Carbon Progress

Launched in 2018, ARTIEM’s Project 8/80 is an ambitious plan to reduce carbon emissions across its hotels by 80 percent within eight years. At ARTIEM Asturias, on-site solar panels turn out nearly 90,000 kilowatt hours annually. Meanwhile, guests are encouraged to adopt more mindful travel habits through initiatives like Airplane Mode, an invitation to turn off all energy consumption in their room with the flip of a switch.

Reducing Food Waste

As a pilot hotel in the EU-funded SPRINT program, ARTIEM Asturias collaborates with research institutions to test food-waste solutions throughout its operations. This includes on-site waste measurement, behavioral insights, and co-created tools for kitchens and guests. Combined with its Aportam philosophy, which prioritizes seasonal, local, and low-impact food, the hotel is actively reducing waste while reshaping how food is sourced and consumed.

Community Impact

ARTIEM Asturias channels guest stays into tangible social impact through year-round partnerships with local organizations, including Down Asturias and RAITANA. Guests can book the Solidarity Room, which has helped generate more than €500,000 since launch to support families in need through the humanitarian NGO Cáritas. Together, these efforts embed the hotel within its local community, supporting inclusion, local livelihoods, and social well-being.

Little by Little

By making sustainability visible and participatory, the hotel empowers guests to turn small actions into meaningful environmental impact. Its poc a poc ethos translates to “little by little,” and includes outings like a plogging day on La Nora beach where guests and community members combine exercise and litter cleanup. An annual charity Christmas market runs workshops for kids and sells handmade gifts, with proceeds going to Down Asturius.
